Welcome to Shale (2019)

Done for a Media Studio assignment where the prompt was to make a 10-second animated illustration for an author of our choice. I chose to illustrate my friend Avi Silver’s work, which could not have happened with their partner Sienna Tristen. Avi and Sienna make up The Shale Project, where their novels are set, and in Avi’s debut novel Two Dark Moons, the moon phases are an important part of the plot and worldbuilding. This meant I had to do a lot of calculation and research to time the frames appropriately, which turned out to be worth it!

I wanted to combine the aesthetics of their debut novels, so you can see elements of Two Dark Moons and The Heretic’s Guide to Homecoming’s covers in the environment around them. They hold up the moons they created together, shedding light on the rich and wonderful world they gave rise to.
